Florida Property Tax Relief: What Buyers Should Know Before 2027

Maria Acosta June 5, 2026

Many buyers are waiting on the sidelines right now because of interest rates, insurance costs, and uncertainty in the market. But one topic that may become very important is Florida’s proposed property tax relief plan.

Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida lawmakers have approved a proposal that will now go to voters in November 2026. If approved, it could increase the homestead exemption for primary Florida residents and help reduce part of their property tax bill. Here is the simple version: This proposal is not law yet. Voters still need to approve it. If approved, the homestead exemption for non-school property taxes would increase to one hundred fifty thousand dollars in twenty twenty-seven and two hundred fifty thousand dollars in twenty twenty-eight. This would only apply to homesteaded properties, meaning your primary residence in Florida. School taxes would still apply.

This is important for buyers because the proposal may create more interest in Florida homeownership, especially for people who are thinking about making Florida their permanent home. For buyers who are already considering a move, purchasing before twenty twenty-seven may be something to discuss with a real estate professional, lender, and tax advisor. The timing could matter, especially if residency requirements become part of the final rules.

There is also an official Save Our Homes calculator available online where homeowners can estimate potential savings based on their property. Of course, every situation is different. This is not tax or legal advice, but it is something buyers should be watching closely. Florida has always been attractive because there is no state income tax. If this property tax relief is approved, it could make owning a primary residence in Florida even more appealing. If you are thinking about buying, selling, or relocating to Florida, this may be the right time to start planning instead of waiting until everyone else does.
